Academic Tutoring

San Mateo Tutoring

Our Approach:

Our academic tutoring goes far beyond just homework completion and memorizing trivial information. Whether we are working on fundamental skills such as note taking, or improving grades in difficult AP classes, we seek to improve the student as a whole. Additionally, with our extensive experience working with local high schools, and our familiarity with Common Core, we can anticipate upcoming challenges by previewing content. Alternatively, if a student has existing content gaps, we can efficiently identify faults within the fundamentals and work to establish a strong base to build from.

Study Skills are the foundation:

Note Taking and Executive Functioning

Learn to identify important pieces of information and organize salient details in well formatted notes that are useful reference when preparing for quizzes and exams. Furthermore, making sure these notes are well indexed in folders or binders to allow for ease of access is paramount. These organization or executive functioning skills are essential for success in the academic world and beyond. Organization is proven to reduce stress and lead to better academic results and is therefore central to our approach. By not only setting a student up with relevant organization tools but also checking in to ensure use, we establish good habits that will be incredibly useful well after tutoring is finished.

Time Management

Learn how to schedule time to study in smaller, more consistent periods of time to optimize efficiency and promote better learning. Educational studies strongly suggest that shorter, more consistent study sessions are more effective than longer ‘cram’ style approaches. Shorter, more consistent exposure to content promotes long term retention of concepts and vocabulary that are essential for subjects like math. Concepts discussed in mathematics, for example, continue to build upon each other chapter by chapter, year after year, and if a student is adapting a cram approach to prepare for quizzes and exams, the immediate and long term impacts can be dramatic. By establishing a quality approach to learning early on, we can set a student up for academic success both in the short, and long term.

Building Better HabitS

Study habits established early on can have dramatic impacts as educational work load and difficulty increases, especially when students approach high school and college. Some students can get away with high grades while neglecting to develop good study skills, but many of these same students struggle and pay the price eventually. By focusing on study skills, we are investing in long term success of the student.

Real World Applications

Everything students learn in school can be applied to the real world. Critical thinking and logical reasoning are the foundations of any quality education. We focus on conceptual understanding and relating concepts to real life experiences over wrote memorization to promote not only information retention but generalization as well.

We have worked with kids from Nueva, Menlo-Atherton, San Mateo High School, Hillsdale Highs School, Burlingame High School, Serra, and St. Francis just to name a few. While most other tutoring services in the Bay Area treat tutoring like a ‘gig’ and have tutors that work part-time for a semester or two, we take tutoring a bit more seriously.
